CD: Wiseman: ‘Something big is about to happen’

090706_wisemanJULY 3, 2009

TIM PRATT

It was Thursday morning, just after 10:30, and Lindsey Wiseman had that look on her face again. She looked like something big was about to happen.

Wiseman smiled, her eyes wide with excitement. She clenched her hands in her lap as she sat in a chair in front of City Hall. In front of her stood her husband, Parker, the incoming mayor of Starkville.

Parker Wiseman and the new seven-member Board of Aldermen were sworn in Thursday morning during the ceremony, and when the city’s next mayor addressed the crowd gathered before him, his gaze eventually fell back on Lindsey, just as it did six months ago when he announced his candidacy for mayor from the same location.

“Lindsey has that look on her face again,” Parker Wiseman said with a smile. “Indeed, she’s right. Something big is about to happen.”

Wiseman and the new board officially take office July 6 at 12:01 a.m. Their first meeting is July 7 at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall.

Wiseman will be joined by Ward 1 Alderman Ben Carver, Ward 2 Alderman Sandra Sistrunk, Ward 3 Alderman Eric Parker, Ward 4 Alderman Richard Corey, Ward 5 Alderman Jeremiah Dumas, Ward 6 Alderman Roy A. Perkins and Ward 7 Alderman Henry Vaughn Sr. Corey and Perkins are the only two returning aldermen.

Camp heads out early

Apparently Mayor Camp decided it would be better to resign and leave office on his own terms.

From the SDN:

But Camp’s veto notice has no effect on the change sincehe (sic) officially retired from office Wednesday.

I do agree with him that the neutered Lynn Lane Project is fairly useless.

But., why leave office early? Does the end of the fiscal year and how it might affect retirement calculation have anything to do with it?

Your Turn: Letter from Mike Allen

The past few months were an exciting mix of energy and hard work. During the course of my campaign for alderman, I enjoyed making many new friends and visiting with hundreds of residents all over Ward 5. It was a rewarding experience that I’m convinced will bring life-long personal benefits.

I thank everyone for their support — giving time, offering encouragement and making campaign contributions. It was humbling to see so many invest in me. I also thank those who voted on my behalf.

While the outcome was not what I had hoped for, Ward 5 will be in capable hands with Jeremiah Dumas as alderman. I appreciate the civil campaign he ran and I look forward to working with him as a friend and advocate for Starkville.

Again, as a candidate, I thank the voters of Ward 5 for the chance to directly participate in the political process. As Americans, let us never forget that blessing of liberty or take it for granted.

Sincerely,
Mike Allen

CD: Mayor Dan Camp looks back on four years of progress

STARKVILLE — In the minds of some Starkville residents, the last four years in City Hall have been as contentious as any in recent memory.

The Board of Aldermen appeared to split up into factions; Mayor Dan Camp was often seen as a polarizing figure; and tensions at City Hall seemed to rise often.

But in Camp’s mind, the last four years shouldn’t be remembered as a city divided. After all, the Board of Aldermen unanimously passed roughly 90 percent of the policies and ordinances brought to the table, he said.

Instead, Camp sees the last four years as some of the most progressive in city history.

“We got more done in the last four years than we did in the previous 40,” Camp said.

Your Turn: Letter from John Gaskin

Dear supporters, friends and residents of Ward III-

The past few months have been among the most rewarding of my life. I am proud to say I have made many new friends during the course of this campaign and I am grateful for your help, encouragement, contributions and support.

In the end, we fell just a few votes shy of victory, but I take pride in having run an honest and factual campaign that was supported by virtually half the voters of Ward III.

I would like to congratulate Mr. Parker on his election to the Board. As I have said the entire campaign, he and I do agree on several things. I ask you each to support our new Mayor and Board of Aldermen as they take over the governing of our city in July. I am excited about the next few years and hope we see many great things happen to the city we love and call home.

As for me, I will not be slipping into the shadows. I intend to stay involved in our community and I will continue to voice my opinion and stand up with our homeowners when the need arises. We must ensure our city plans for the future in a way that protects our neighborhoods, property values and quality of life. I am optimistic that Mayor Wiseman and our Board of Aldermen will do just that.

Sincerely,

John Gaskin

The next four years

The long election season is over. I have to say this was one of the best in recent memory.

One of the things that pleased me most was the involvement of the under 45 crowd in running and campaigning. Starkville has made a change from from the “bald-headed old men” crowd (as one poster put it) to a new group of leaders.

Mayor Parker Wiseman

Aldermen
Ward 1 Ben Carver (R)
Ward 2 Sandra Sistrunk (D)
Ward 3 Richard Corey (D -I)
Ward 4 Eric Parker (R)
Ward 5 Jeremiah Dumas (D)
Ward 6 Roy Perkins (D -I)
Ward 7 Henry Vaughn

A few quick observations.

I would say Sunday sales is a slam dunk. I count 4 yeas with a “no veto” from Wiseman.

Sandra Sistrunk ran a heck of a campaign against Rodney Lincoln.

The Republican’s gained 2 seats but lost an incumbent. Any life in the local party left?

The Democratic party/Wiseman campaign built a heck of a machine.
