Though the 93-year Oktibbeha County chapter of the American Red Cross could close its doors, the director whose tenure ends July 13 says there’s still hope for local disaster victims.
Oktibbeha County supervisors on Monday agreed, adopting a resolution seeking to hire the departing Red Cross staff members to head a new disaster response division of the county’s Emergency Management Office dealing with “human services” — namely mass care, sheltering, feeding, public training and local volunteer coordination.
For five years as Red Cross director, Becky Wilkes says she has asked other non-profit organizations and the public to help fund the Red Cross.
But higher-ups in what she now calls a “bureaucracy” announced the local chapter would likely close due to offices across the state being “too close together,” Wilkes says.
