Funderburk art exhibit opens today in Flowood

FLOWOOD — The opening reception for “Illumina” will be held tonight from 5:30 to 8 p.m. tonight at the Bryant Galleries in Flowood, and one of Starkville’s outstanding artists will be honored.
“Illumina” paintings of Brent Funderburk will be on display at the Bryant Galleries through July 16.
The “Illumina” exhibit will be a gallery of work brought to life through the creation of the signature artwork for the USA International Ballet Competition (IBC). Funderburk said he was inspired by the 100th anniversary of the Ballet Russes “The Firebird” as he created the USA IBC artwork.

Funderburk said the original “Firebird,” represented the first in a series of spectacular collaborations among contemporary choreographers, composers, artists and dancers of the time.

The Firebird helped make the “Ballets Russes’” one of the most influential ballet companies of the 20th century, in part because of its ground-breaking artistic collaborations. Funderburk said he sees the USA IBC as a renaissance of that collaborative spirit.
Last Spring, the USA IBC named Funderburk the official artist for the 2010 competition to be held June 12–27, in Jackson. As the official artist for the event, Funderburk’s “Firebird 2010” serves as the signature image for this year’s event and will be featured on the 2010 commemorative poster.
