CD: MSU hosts holiday bazaar

SPECIAL TO THE DISPATCH

STARKVILLE — Mississippi State University is welcoming the holiday season with a two-day arts and crafts fair Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. -7 p.m. both days, at the Joe Frank Sanderson Center.

Vendors come from across the South, including the states of Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas and Louisiana to display and sell goods. More than 100 vendors will be present, selling a variety of items. Everyday items as well as holiday gifts will be available, including, but not limited to, jewelry, pottery, ornaments, candles and monogrammed items.

In its 37th year, the MSU Holiday Bazaar is a tradition, attracting customers from all over North Mississippi.

“The Campus Activities Board is excited to be continuing the tradition of the MSU Holiday Bazaar,” says Holiday Bazaar Director Samantha Musil. “The student members of CAB know there is something special about being part of an event that’s been taking place for 37 years. The Holiday Bazaar began long before any of them were students here and will continue long after they graduate. They believe strongly in continuing and building upon the tradition.”

CD: Locally, Black Friday 2009 tops last year

JASON BROWNE & TIM PRATT

091130_fridayBlack Friday lived up to its name for a number of local retailers as merchants reported increased sales over last year.

An increase in customer traffic and spending was felt in department stores, gift boutiques and even restaurants as customers took to the aisles in search of holiday deals.

Business was good at Game Stop on Highway 12 in Starkville, where manager Scott Boggs said customers were lined up outside the door before he opened. Crowds were similar to last year, he said.

“People are saying there’s an economic downturn but it doesn’t seem to be affecting us,” Boggs said.

Predictably, department stores were the biggest beneficiaries. Columbus’ Belk Assistant Manager Cindy Parker wouldn’t reveal her store’s take, but she did divulge the chain was expecting a 16 percent increase in sales, and the Columbus store exceeded that expectation.

This project has been immensely satisfying. Our vision is to try to create an arts community on North Jackson.

My thanks to the companies that have joined us so far- Mediagraphix Photography, Cosper & Associates, Stringo/Famek and Jobman USA.

We hope to announce a few other businesses soon.

Feel free to stop in for a tour.

CD: Starkville man who allegedly told ‘sob story’ held for robbery, kidnapping

TIM PRATT

091124_robberySTARKVILLE — A Starkville man who police say has been going door-to-door in the middle of the night and begging for money with a “sob story” about a sick daughter is now being held on charges of robbery and kidnapping.

The charges against 32-year-old Develle Henderson stem from an incident Saturday night, during which he knocked on the door of a man and his fiancée and demanded $20, Starkville Police Department Sgt. Chadd Garnett said. Henderson kept his hand in his coat pocket during the encounter, which frightened the victim, Garnett said.

“With the bulge in his pocket, the victim felt like it was more than his hand in his pocket,” Garnett said. “The victim thought it was a weapon. The suspect then demanded $20 and the victim was in fear, so he gave him the $20 so he would leave.”

Henderson then “forced” the victim to the victim’s vehicle while keeping his hand in his pocket as if he had a weapon, Garnett said, and made the victim drive him to an unknown apartment complex on the north side of town. The victim and his fiancée didn’t report the incident to police until Monday out of fear for their safety.

CD: Residents concerned over road extension

TIM PRATT

091124_extensionThe plan to extend Pat Station Road roughly three-fourths of a mile from Old West Point Road to the intersection of North Montgomery Street, Rockhill Road and Garrard Road was met with interest and some concern Monday during a public hearing at the Starkville Sportsplex.

The first phase of the project, estimated to cost $1.3 million, would see the construction of two 12-foot-wide vehicle lanes, curbs and gutters, and an 8-foot-wide concrete multi-use path on the north side of the road. The second phase could potentially include the construction of wider, four-lane boulevards at the intersections of Pat Station Road and Old West Point Road, and at the intersection of Pat Station Road and North Montgomery, Rockhill and Garrard roads. City officials also eventually hope to build a multi-use path on the south side of the road.

Resident Mary Bell was concerned because the construction of boulevards during the second phase of the project would mean work crews potentially could tear up newly paved roadway to realign the two intersections.

CD: Area school districts get middle-of-road scores in new accountability ranking

DISPATCH STAFF REPORT

091123_schoolsArea school districts have much room for improvement, according to new school district accountability scores released today.

The state Department of Education’s new Statewide Accountability System scores measure districts and individual schools against the rest of the nation. The state’s old five-level rating system only compared districts to others within the state.

The system is based on a district or school’s achievement rate on assessment tests, student growth and graduation rate.

Previously, Mississippi schools and districts were measured against in-state achievement, said Kris Kaase, deputy superintendent of instructional programs.

Now, “to be the highest, the school or district has to be the best among the nation,” Kaase said.

The Columbus Municipal School District overall received an “At Risk of Failing” rating, near the bottom of the rankings — Star, High Performing, Successful, Academic Watch, Low Performing, At Risk of Failing, and Failing. The Lowndes County School District was given an “Academic Watch” rating.
