TIM PRATT

090930_matalin1James Carville and Mary Matalin come from vastly different backgrounds.

He’s a Democratic political strategist who grew up in Louisiana. She’s a Republican from Illinois.

Yet, despite their vastly different political views, the couple has been happily married since 1993. At a talk Tuesday night in Mississippi State University’s Bettersworth Auditorium, as part of the College of Business’s third annual Leadership Summit, both touched on the difficulties facing the U.S., but also on the strategies they’ve used to manage their home life despite opposing political views and campaigns.

Matalin was an assistant to former President George W. Bush and served as a counselor to Vice President Dick Cheney, while Carville was former President Bill Clinton’s campaign manager.

On the couple’s ability to discuss politics at home, Matalin said she and Carville decided against it “a long time ago.”

CD: Police searching for Oktibbeha man

TIM PRATT

STARKVILLE — The Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department is asking for the public’s help to locate a man missing since Monday afternoon.

Authorities this morning were still searching for Glen Sisk, 58, who was last seen Monday leaving his home in the area of Oktoc and Fultz roads, Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy George Carrithers said. Sisk is partially paralyzed and unable to speak because of a stroke, Carrithers said. He was last seen riding a green Honda Forman Rubicon four-wheeler with a green camouflage bag attached.

The Sheriff’s Department, several volunteer fire departments, Starkville police and other law enforcement agencies searched the woods and roadways around the home Sisk shares with his family until 7 p.m. or 8 p.m. Monday to no avail.

Authorities also investigated a possible Sisk sighting on Highway 12 in Starkville, Carrithers said, but it was not confirmed.

Sisk is 5 feet, 8 inches tall, weighs 165 pounds, has gray hair and a gray goatee, Carrithers said. He was last seen wearing a baseball cap, blue jeans and a white shirt with his right arm in a sling.

CD: Starkville Parks and Rec garners state recognition

TIM PRATT

STARKVILLE – The Starkville Parks and Recreation Department is celebrating two awards it won this week at the Mississippi Recreation and Park Association Conference in McComb.

Starkville won the award for Outstanding Facility Design among Class II Parks and Recreation departments for the recently completed Sportsplex facility on Lynn Lane. Class II Parks and Recreation departments are found in cities whose population lies between 15,000 and 34,000 people, Starkville Parks and Rec director Matthew Rye said.

Architect Gary Shafer designed the Starkville Sportsplex and was on hand for the award ceremony.

“With the best design, I think it’s great not only for Parks and Recreation, but also for the city of Starkville,” Rye said. “It’s something that the Department, the Park Commission, the architect, the contractor, everybody can hang their hats on. Everybody worked together and this shows you what can be done when everybody puts their ideas together and works together.”

090924_bulldogbashSTARKVILLE — The streets of the Cotton District will be abuzz this weekend as the 10th annual Bulldog Bash kicks off with food, fun and live music.

But the event also will give those in attendance the chance to give back to the community.

Festival patrons will be encouraged to take out their cell phones before headliner Third Eye Blind takes the stage at 10:30 p.m. for a text message campaign to benefit the United Way of North Central Mississippi. People can text message the letters “NCMISS” to the number 864833, which spells “united,” and donate $5 to the United Way.

Roughly $1,300 already has been raised for the United Way through the cell-phone campaign, which has taken place all this week, Mississippi State University Student Association President Blake Jeter said Wednesday afternoon.

“It’s a quick, easy, innovative way to give money to the United Way,” Jeter said. “Hopefully we can raise a couple thousand dollars.”

STARKVILLE — After more than two months with an interim city attorney, the Starkville Board of Aldermen Tuesday finally agreed on an official replacement.

During an executive session, aldermen voted 5-0 in favor of hiring Chris Latimer to serve as city attorney. He will be paid $95 per hour, or no more than $95,000 per year, Mayor Parker Wiseman said. Latimer works at Mitchell McNutt & Sams in Columbus.

Ward 3 Alderman Eric Parker and Ward 4 Alderman Richard Corey did not attend the meeting and did not vote.
