The Starkville Dispatch

The cat- or paper- is out of the bag with the launch of the Starkville Dispatch.

The Commercial Dispatch is creating a new daily publication and distributing it free via boxes across town. It will contain CDispatch info with expanded Starkville/MSU coverage.

They are going to rack distribution only and shutting down their paid delivery service to customers.

The Tupelo paper did something similar a few years ago, but have essentially pulled out of the market.

Good move? Bad move? How does the Starkville Daily react?

Comments

  1. Charlie Swanson says:

The Starkville Daily News is HORRIBLE. It only makes sense that someone would try to take the market.

  2. D. Moore says:

I agree. The SDN is terrible. The paper that they make for the university, “Bulldog Beat”, is just as bad. I don’t think that they even have an editor there – the spelling errors and grammar errors are numerous. Often times there are even many right there in the article titles. While the Dispatch isn’t exactly the greatest paper either, it’s definitely better than SDN, so I welcome this new development.

  3. amazed says:

This is good news for a Monday!

  4. Jeremy Murdock says:

This will really hurt the SDN. They have to step up to the plate or bow out of the game. Only time will tell.

I think it is great news (no pun intended) for Starkville.

It says that it will be the normal Commercial Dispatch plus Starkville-specific coverage. And…it is free!

  5. Starkville Stiletto says:

I’m spoiled. I like my Commercial Dispatch delivered to my driveway. Doubt I will drive around town looking for a free copy. Will there be an online version?

  6. Jimmy B says:

I’m with you, Stiletto. The paper in the driveway is hard to beat. Wonder what Birney’s got in store for those of us paid up for several months? Looks like home delivery is to stop ASAP.

  7. Eric Villavaso says:

I’ve subscribed to both papers for years, and like SS, I like the home delivery. Nevertheless, I will drive around town to get the Starkville Dispatch, and I’ll continue with my home-delivered SDN. I hope the SD will sustain the Jumble, Crossword Puzzle, Word Warp, Cryptoquote and that cursed Sudoku.

  8. colfaxcountyman says:

Amazing-over the first headline of the Starkville Daily, New Hope and Heritage in baseball game. Geeez, at least pick two other schools to highlight on the cover of the “Starkville” paper. This will not work. They would have been better served to work the region angle and let Starkville-Now carry the local mix.

  9. Oktibbeha residents who pre-paid The Dispatch for their subscriptions will be refunded a pro-rated amount. Home delivery of CD will continue until July 7.

  10. Melissa says:

I can walk to Starkville Cafe and get the Starkville Dispatch for free?? Sweet! So much content! No dangerous rise in blood pressure over front page typos! Is this a dream??

  11. Quick update on distribution: Due to popular demand, we have decided to offer home delivery of The Starkville Dispatch to a limited area beginning July 8, 2009. Monthly subscriptions are $12. The delivery area is roughly the Starkville city limits. Details will be posted shortly on thestarkvilledispatch.com.
