StarkvilleNow redesign

We shifted a few things around this weekend.

There are new icons at the top of the page which allow you to subscribe in a variety of ways.

You can email us directly from the homepage by clicking the “Email” link in the header. The Twitter logo takes you to our Twitter feed. The podcast icon subscribes you to the SN podcast feed via iTunes. The RSS icons subscribe you to our News and Comments feed.

We simplified our homepage. The main category is “Happening Now,” which was the old “New on StarkvileNow.” “Happening Now” will feature every item as they are posted, newest first.

Two highlight areas are in the bottom section. Right now, “Election 09″ and “Podcasts” are in those slots. They will change over time.

You can access a particular subject by selecting it’s drop-down category in the gray menu bar. We have divided “Local News” into “Starkville,” “Oktibbeha County,” “Golden Triangle” and “State.” We have treated “Education” the same way with sections for city and county schools along with MSU.

We have also moved pure opinion to the “Voices” section. StarkvilleNow editorials can be found under “Our Turn.” Submitted letters-to-the-editor will be placed in “Your Turn.” The aim is to create a wall between news and opinion so you will know what you are reading.

We’ve kept the “Recent Comments” box and added a “Popular Post” section.

Thoughts? Anything we are missing? Anything you want added?

STARKVILLE — Oktibbeha County schools will continue to send students to the Millsaps Career and Technology Center, but they asked officials to gather data on what it would take to run their own program.

The vo-tech vote was postponed from last meeting when the board wanted to look into offering their own program. Assistant Superintendent Jerome Smith told the board it’s more cost effective to participate in the local vocational consortium offered by the Starkville School District.

“To run individual programs at each school would be cost prohibitive,” Smith said. “When you’re talking about a vocational complex, you’re talking about large sums of money.”
