Lockdown at Ward-Stewart

From Nicole Thomas, Public Information Officer Starkville School District

November 21, 2008

Ward Stewart Elementary School was under lockdown for approximately 30 minutes this morning after a teacher saw an unknown person run across the playground while she was outside with her students. The incident occurred around 10:40, and the teacher quickly alerted the office and other teachers who were outside with their students. The teachers immediately began gathering the children together and brought them inside the school. As the children were returning to the school, the police arrived at the campus. The school was placed under lockdown immediately and all children were accounted for in their classrooms. Henderson Intermediate School was also notified of the situation since it is located on the same campus as Ward Stewart Elementary School. Principal Diane Baker and Asst. Principal Watress Harris along with Asst. Superintendents Walter Gonsoulin and Beth Sewell remained in contact with police until the campus was determined safe and the lockdown was lifted around 11:10. Children returned to their normal schedules, but they were not to go outside to the playground area for the remainder of the day.
