Get it in writing

SIM relied on a conversation 3 years ago as the basis for the assumption that “in kind” services would be adequate for the $1.2 million matching grant from the feds for the Lynn Lane project the Dispatch reports.

Ouch. Did no one think to get it in writing?

Busted!

AG Jim Hood, who can’t seem to go after criminals the Feds have ID’d, decided to do a little underage drinking sweep in Starkville.

Bin 612 and Old Venice were cited (out of eleven restaurants checked) for serving alcohol to minors according to the Rankin Ledger.

No word on whether the minors tried to bribe the wait staff for booze.

Bike path done?

According to the Dispatch, “in kind” doesn’t equal cash. MDOT is requiring $300,000+ in cash for their matching grant for the Lynn Lane bike path and will not accept equivalent in kind services from the city. The City proabably doesn’t have, or want to pony up, that kind of cash presently. Is this the end of the bike path?

Steve Rogers on Lowndes County jobs

WCBI’s Steve Rogers reflects on Lowndes County’s ED successes- specifically the newly created 6000 jobs over the past few years. He goes a step beyond parsing the numbers and offers a warning to the locals about getting too complacent or the jobs will sseep somewhere else beside Columbus.

New Stark jobs; Lowndes residents get a leg up

The Dispatch reports on the new Stark Aerospace facility that will be built close to GTR (not to be confused with Stark Industries). In his report to the Lowndes Board of Supes, Link Director Joe Max Higgins said that a term of the development package was that Lowndes residents would ahve prefernce in hiring.

From the Dispatch:

“And there’s a catch,” said Higgins. “They will give preference to well-qualified Lowndes County residents when they are hiring employees for this new facility.”

I would guess that this was in response to Mayor Dan Camp’s remarks to Link officials about Starkville being the preferred living destination for new hires in the Triangle. The Link seems to be trying to settle the new hires in Lowndes County.

2 percent tax hike redux?

The BOA is set to discuss raising the 2% restaurant/hotel tax to finance “municipal buildings” at Tuesday’s meeting according to the SDN. Agenda here from the city website.
