Store movement

One of the other rumors floating is the pull out of Office Depot from the former Jitney locale for a spot in Cotton Mills. (I can just see Dan Camp now, thumping his chest, yelling “I will see you a big box retailer and raise you a restaurant” in the Columbus-Steve Rogers-Camp lovefest/feud.) That also puts Sears, under new ownership, mover to the former Jitney spot.

Good to see some rumors coming about about possible Cotton Mills happenings. It’s been my experience that it’s a bad sign if you go too long without hearing something, rumor or otherwise.

I’m not sure if this rumor has moved to fact yet, but I know this…. Office Depot doesn’t sell mattresses and refrigerators. We drove by the other night and the door was ope n- inside were displays of refrigerators and mattresses. So I’m thinking that is a pretty clear indicator Office Depot is not going in there. We were afraid it was going to be a Cowboy Maloneys or something.

  3. Ironically I just posted about this in my own blog today. My understanding is that things are still on go for the old Jitney location. I haven’t heard otherwise yet, but Office Depot does have a floor plan submitted to our building department and I’m sure if they change their mind the developer will have a lease sign out.

It is a fact….SEARS is going into the old Jitney location. They have a sign on the door of their current location. I am sorry to say, but this is old news……….

Now, the news about the Office Depot, I cannot confirm, but I am aware of the fact that they (The Office Depot Company) has limited its expansion due to the current economic downturn nationwide. They were high on the Starkville store idea, but the Shopping Center Group has advised them to hold off on the Jitney space so that we can see if the Cotton Mills project takes off.

While I like office depot, I hope they have a Belk or something as the second big box anchor lined up. We need a reasonable (not the extremes of J.C. Penny or G. Sherman) option in town.

JC Penney is extreme? As opposed to Belk? Yeah, George Sherman is squarely out of my price range, but I’ve always considered Belk and JCP to be *about* the same.

As to Office Depot, if someone would make it happen faster, I would personally sweep the ground in front of them as they walk and announce their arrival every time they went into a room. How could a college town ever justify not having a major office supply store?
