1000+ page views on 4/16/08

Thanks to all loyal – and not so loyal – readers – for helping break the 1000 mark for daily page views on StarkvilleNow yesterday. This has been pretty fun. Let me know what you think.

It’s always interesting to see how the two papers play BOA

SDN led with the proposed fee hike for the contractors doing the meter reading. The Dispatch focused on the Parks Commission and the language barrier of the claims docket.

“Am I speaking Portuguese? Do you understand what I’m saying?” is the official quote of the day. Te Sumner David III endorsement deal for “Speaking Portuguese” line of shirts and outwear is in negotiations.

MSU gets more $, Ole Miss gets way more $$

Looks like is stinks to be a smaller college in the State of Mississippi. The haves appear to be get the lion’s share of funding, with parts being taken from the have nots. State won’t get as much as Ole Miss over the 6 year projection of the new IHL funding formula, but the smaller schools LOSE money which goes to the bigger schools. Not only does USM have to play i CUSA, but they have to cough up dough t the bigger boys. Ouch.

Listening date set for IHL conversations

From MSU University Relations:

April 28 is the date for “listening sessions” with the IHL search committee for MSU’s next president. The location will be the Hunter Henry Center and the times are still to be determined, but will be released soon.

Some sessions will be webcast. Information about those also will be announced soon.

Interested parties are invited to contact Jerry Gilbert, Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and campus liaison with the search committee, by e-mail or at 662-325-3742. Gilbert is available for questions and comments now and throughout the process.

Starkville BOA. Where only Portuguesee is spoken here.

The Dispatch article on last night’s BOA is worth it for Sumner Davis’ quote alone. It’s amazing sometimes that we can get anything done as a city.

I think a t-shirt is in the works.

Steve Rogers (WCBI) joins the David Thornell fanclub

Steve Rogers has column at WCBI.com about the current situation regarding David Thornell. Steve makes some very, good valid points. I don’t think Steve has all theh info though. Worth a read.

Reaction to failed 1% tax

The Dispatch wraps up the Senate defeat of HB1728, the Starkville (and others) 1% tax bill.

The city gets it’s money two ways- property taxes and sales tax. If the restaurants want to absorb the impending tax increase out of their pockets (via more property tax) instead of passing the cost directly along to the end user in the form of a 1% tax, so be it. At least at 1%, you know how much your tax is going to increase.

Taxes will increase- to pay for water/sewer infrastructure, a new justice complex and a convention center. The Starkville Restaurant Association just guaranteed that you can’t vote on part of it.

Supes following BOA?

Skip tackles the perception that the Supes aren’t appearing to be doing much.

Trains, trains, trains

The Dispatch has an article about reviving a train line form Columbus to Greenville. A few miles run through Maben. Seems to be the time with diesel prices soaring.
